What Will Happen To EU Citizens Working In Security After Brexit?

Whether we leave with a deal or no deal, if things go according to plan, the United Kingdom will be going ahead with Brexit and leaving the European Union on the scheduled date of March 29th. But with the UK leaving, what does this mean for EU citizens working in the security industry?

The SIA recently announced that they are working with the Home Office in a bid to offer relevant advice to assist business in managing any future impacts flowing from Brexit. This includes assisting business employing EU citizens arriving after Brexit, as well as offering any relevant guidance and advice.

This is particularly important for the security sector and for those who work as Door Supervisors and Security Guards, many of whom are EU citizens and make up a large part of this industry.

As it stands, the department for exiting the EU policy paper confirms that EU citizens and their family members who are currently residing in the UK by Brexit will continue to be able to live and work in the UK and will be able to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to confirm their status.

This will of course come as a relief to those EU citizens who are currently living or working in the UK.

How to apply for EU Settlement Scheme

The EU Settlement Scheme will open fully by 30 March 2019. You may be able to apply now if you meet the criteria.

This basically means that you will need to apply to stay in the UK. As recently confirmed by the Prime Minster, this application will be free.

The deadline for applying will be 30 June 2021. However, be advised that the deadline for applying will be 31 December 2020 if the UK leaves the EU without a deal.

More information on the EU Settlement Scheme can be found on the Official UK Government Website.

How to work in the security sector

If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain a SIA Licence.

To obtain a SIA Licence, you will need to complete a course. Once you have completed the course, will you then be able to apply for an SIA Licence and work in the security sector.
