What is a Personal Licence?

A personal licence allows an individual or business owner to supply or authorise the supply of alcohol. But what is required to actually get one? Read on to discover more about a personal licence, and how to obtain one.

The Personal Licence Explained

A Personal Licence is issued by Licensing Authority and enables that person to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol in accordance with an appropriate Premises License.

  • The license holder can only sell alcohol in accordance with the time and conditions stated on the Premises License.
  • A Personal License is granted to an individual can only hold one Personal License.
  • A Personal License is valid indefinitely.
  • A personal License can be granted to an individual even if that person not working in licensed premises.

Applying for Your Personal License

In order to apply for your Personal License, you must:

  1. Be aged 18 or over
  2. Hold an accredited qualification
  3. Not have had a Personal License forfeited in the last five years.

The application itself is made up of several parts:

  • Application form for a Personal License signed by the applicant
  • Disclosure of convictions and declaration form signed by the applicant
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS)
  • Two photographs, one of which must be signed on the reverse to confirm it is a true likeness by a person of standing in the community (e.g. a clergyman, local councillor or magistrate), or a person with a professional qualification (e.g. solicitor, doctor)
  • Application fee

On applying for Personal License, the applicant will also have to declare any relevant or foreign offences as defined by the Licensing Act 2003.

Examples of these are:

  • Any licensing offence since 1964
  • Firearms offences
  • Dishonest offence such as theft or deception
  • Driving whilst under the influence of drink and/or drugs
  • Certain violent offences
  • Some trading standards offences

How to get a Personal Licence
