SIA Launches #SaferNightsOut Campaign

Violent crime has soared in the UK in the past year, with a 19% increase just in 2018 alone. While going out in the evening should be an enjoyable occasion, and for most people, it is, there is still a concern that incidents of crime could occur, leaving people feeling vulnerable and endangered.

To ensure that both the public and security staff who work and operate in the night-time economy, the Security Industry Authority are launching a national campaign in June and July which will see SIA investigators visiting pubs, bars, and clubs in towns and cities across the UK to meet door staff.

The campaign will be accompanied by an innovative social media campaign under the hashtag #SaferNightsOut, which will also see a copy of the ‘Safer Physical Intervention’ leaflet being sent out to every SIA Licence holder in a bid to highlight and refresh the importance of safe physical intervention practices in the event of a hostile and potentially aggressive situation.

The SIA hopes the campaign will encourage both safety and reinsurance to members of the public and security staff while also sharing information on safer restraint, listening to the concerns of security staff, and encouraging all door staff to report violence and abuse against them.

Kevin Young, who manages the SIA’s South East Region Partnerships and Interventions team, is leading the campaign.  He says:

“We’re looking forward to meeting door staff and having these important conversations. We’re asking venues and security staff to look out for our #SaferNightsOut messages on social media – and for them to share and engage with our posts while the campaign is running, which is from Monday 17 June to Monday 15 July.”

Posters as part of the #SaferNightsOut campaign encouraging security staff to report violence and verbal abuse can be found on the official SIA Safer Nights Out Campaign Page.
