How has the security industry changed after Brexit?

With what has seemed to take a lifetime to complete, the Brexit deal has finally been agreed. With this, we thought we’d take a look at what the impact of Britain leaving the EU has on the security industry and what could be in store for new and existing SIA licence holders.

Looking Positively

Taking a very positive approach to the situation and trusting the statements from Boris Johnson, he believes that leaving the EU will bring a wave of investment to the UK, creating a mini boom in our economy. With this potential boom, this will hopefully lead to an increased demand for jobs and thus the increased need for security operatives to man the likes of offices, shops and when this pandemic is over bars and clubs.

With the deal agreed, this could also lead to less labour coming in from EU countries and with a large portion of security guards and door supervisors with SIA licences belonging to EU nationals, this could lead to more opportunities for people looking to kick start their career within the security sector or for those who have found themselves struggling to work during these difficult times.

On The Flip Side

Being sensible and looking at the potential consequences of brexit for the security industry is the potential for companies moving their headquarters outside of the UK. This would then lead to big losses in jobs across multiple sectors and could also see global security companies also pulling out the UK.

However, this could see smaller security companies grow within the security sector which could slightly offset the potential negative impacts.

How to work in the security sector

If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain a SIA Licence.
