The next time you are conveniently ‘Netflix and Chilling,’ you might want to ask yourself the question, do I need a TV Licence to do what I’m doing currently? The answer to that question may surprise you, and end up saving you an extra bit of money also.
While many of us still tune in to watch the latest episode of EastEnders or Strictly Come Dancing, many of us are ditching the traditional methods of television entertainment altogether, preferring instead to binge on back-to-back Netflix and Amazon sessions. But in choosing to stream our favourite films and TV shows instead of watching via a broadcaster, do we still need a TV licence?
What is a TV Licence?
A TV Licence is an official licence that legally allows the holder to watch live television and grants legal permission to use television-receiving equipment, such as an aerial, to watch programmes as they are being shown on TV.
Many people have criticised the TV Licence, as since it’s introduction in 1946, the way in which we view and obtain news and entertainment has drastically changed, with the evolution of the internet, social media, DVD and Blu-Ray and of course, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon.
Also, with the amount of choice widely available on television, many questions why the BBC should receive public money when so many of the state broadcasters’ presenters and executives can receive anywhere from £75,000 to a staggering £1 million a year just on salary alone.
How much does a TV Licence cost?
Currently, a colour TV licence costs £154.50. While a black and white TV licence costs £52. A TV Licence has to be renewed every year.
Do I need a TV Licence for Netflix?
If you only watch shows through streaming services like Netflix, then you do not need a TV licence. This means you can binge-watch an entire series without the need for a TV Licence.
However, you should be cautious. The moment you watch any form of live TV, this includes watching from your TV, phone, laptop or tablet, you could face a fine of £1,000.
This also includes watching catch-up programmes on BBC iPlayer, or even recording live television and not watching it until after it has been broadcast.
Is it worth it?
This is entirely up to you. While many of us do stream shows via Netflix and Amazon, not being able to watch any form of live television will limit your choice of what to watch. Also, you risk the chance of accidentally watching something live and face the risk of a hefty fine.
To Netflix and Chill or to watch Love Island, with a TV Licence, you can do both. Without a TV Licence, you are definitely just getting mugged off (and missing out on some brilliant live TV in the meantime.
